The problem

Canadian creators are getting it wrong in both directions.

The tax system wasn't built for content creators. Most accountants don't understand foreign-platform income. TurboTax doesn't either. So creators either overpay tax they don't owe — or accumulate a liability they don't know about. Five mistakes account for almost all of it.

01

Charging HST on income that's zero-rated

YouTube AdSense, Twitch subs, and most Patreon pledges are paid by non-resident platforms — they're zero-rated under Schedule VI of the Excise Tax Act. Many creators register, charge HST, and remit anyway.

02

Never hearing about T1135

If your foreign platform balances cross CAD $100,000 at any point in the year, you owe a T1135 filing. Penalties start at $25/day. Most creators have never heard of this form.

03

Treating brand deals like AdSense

A Canadian brand paying you for sponsored content is a taxable supply. You should be collecting GST/HST on it. Many creators don't — and when the CRA reassesses, they owe the tax they never charged.

04

Missing home-office & equipment deductions

Cameras, lighting, edit software, a percentage of rent and internet — all deductible. Without a system to track receipts and apply the rules, these deductions are easy to miss, and they add up to thousands a year.

Why not just hire an accountant?

You probably still should.
But not for what you think.

A creator-specialized CPA charges $3,000–$8,000/year and tells you what you owed last March. We do the year-round bookkeeping that makes their filing easy and 5× cheaper — so you keep the accountant and stop paying them to count receipts.

* How we estimate. CPA fees benchmarked against four Canadian creator-CPAs in BC/ON, sole prop bookkeeping & year-end packages. DIY assumes TurboTax Self-Employed + spreadsheets, plus a missed-deduction factor at scale. LoonieLedgr pricing combines our subscription + a filing-only accountant for the T1. Real numbers vary by complexity, province, and how organized your shoebox is.

How it works

Three steps. Then it
runs in the background.

No spreadsheets. No "wait until March to find out." Your platforms that allow it sync automatically, the ones that don't take a 30-second CSV upload, and every dollar gets classified with the actual ETA section cited.

Why we need a fact from you. Fenix International is the operator of OnlyFans. The GST/HST treatment of this payout depends on where your subscribers are located. Why year-round matters

The traditional accountant model gives you a year-end snapshot of a year-round problem. You find out what you owe in March — long after you could have done anything about it. LoonieLedgr keeps your books classified and your tax position clear every month, so the number is never a surprise.

FAQ

Common questions.

The ones we get asked most. If yours isn't here, email hello@loonieledgr.ca.

For most creators on the Solo and Growing tiers, yes — it generates everything your accountant would charge you for, and you (or TurboTax) file the actual return. On the Incorporated tier, we work alongside accountants rather than replacing them, because T2 corporate filings need an EFILE-certified preparer.
No. You're always the one confirming each classification — we suggest treatments with citations, you confirm. That creates an audit trail showing you applied reasonable interpretations of the Excise Tax Act, which is the standard the CRA actually cares about. If you ever do get audited, the year-end pack contains everything an examiner would ask for.
Auto-sync via OAuth (one-time setup, then live): YouTube AdSense, Patreon, Stripe, Ko-fi, Substack. You click "Connect," authorize read-only access, and we pull every new transaction within minutes of it landing.

One-click CSV upload (about 30 seconds per platform per month): TikTok, OnlyFans, Fansly, Twitch revenue, Gumroad, Amazon Associates. These platforms don't expose earnings via API to third parties, so you download the CSV they already produce and drop it into LoonieLedgr. We email a reminder when a payout typically lands.

Bank transactions: Either live via Flinks (RBC, TD, BMO, Wealthsimple, National Bank, Questrade, and 30+ others) or via monthly CSV upload from your online banking. Either way, the classification engine is the same.
We support both, via CSV upload. Both platforms produce clean monthly statements you download from your creator portal (Statements page on OnlyFans, similar on Fansly). You upload it, we classify by transaction type — subscriptions, tips, PPV, referrals — and apply the right place-of-supply treatment based on the subscriber-geography facts you confirm at onboarding. Adult-platform income is genuinely tricky from a CRA perspective, so the Growing tier includes quarterly CPA review for these cases.
Your subscription covers everything from your sign-up date forward. If you also need 2024 or 2025 books — to file an overdue T1 or HST return, or to start the year with a clean catch-up — add a one-time Historical Catch-up: $149 for 12 months back, $249 for 24 months, $399 for multi-year (up to 5).

We pull every prior transaction from your connected platforms and bank, classify it with the same CRA rules we use on live data, and produce a fully audit-trailed PDF. Typical turnaround: 7–10 business days. This is a separate purchase from your monthly subscription because it's a one-time professional service — comparable to what an accountant would charge $500–2,000 for the same scope.
Mechanically, you can cancel any time. But the year-end pack — the PDF your accountant needs to file your T1 — only unlocks 90 days after sign-up on active subscriptions. This is a deliberate design choice: tax classification is a year-round responsibility, and the year-end deliverable reflects accumulated work, not a one-time generation.

What we'd recommend if you're filing late: sign up now, add the Historical Catch-up for whichever year you're filing ($149–$399), and stay on for the quarterly HST returns that come due immediately after — so you're caught up and current in one move.
QuickBooks doesn't know that Google Ireland Ltd is a non-resident supplier, or that Twitch payouts to Canadian residents are zero-rated, or that a $100k YouTube balance triggers T1135. It's built for general small businesses. LoonieLedgr encodes the specific Canadian creator tax rules — that's the entire reason it exists.
Yes. Platform connections use read-only OAuth (you can revoke us anytime from Google, Patreon, Stripe etc.). Bank connections, when available, go through Flinks — the Canadian data aggregator used by Wealthsimple and Questrade. All data is encrypted at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.3). We never see or store your platform or bank credentials. You can delete your account and all data at any time.
Yes, anytime, from your account settings. No annual contracts unless you choose annual billing (which saves 20%). If you cancel, you keep access until the end of your paid period and can export everything before then.
